S\u00e1ndor was born in a large pious Jewish family. He studied in a heder in his village and later in Nagyb\u00e1nya and Debrecen. He studied at the Rabbinical Seminary in Budapest and learned to be a tailor. S\u00e1ndor also did a doctorate in history in Budapest. In the year 1942 he earned a Ph. degree in philosophy at the University of P\u00e1zm\u00e1ny P\u00e9ter in Budapest. He returned to Debrecen and was Rabbi Meir Weiss\u2019 deputy. S\u00e1ndor taught at the local Jewish high school and was active in the Zionist movement in the framework of \u201cHatzionim Haclali\u2019im\u201d. At the beginning of 1944 he moved to Budapest and joined the \u201cHanoar Hatzioni\u201d movement. S\u00e1ndor engaged in obtaining documents. He was the assistant of Ott\u00f3 Komoly, president of the Hungarian Zionist Association who was at the head of the Relief and Rescue Committee. S\u00e1ndor\u2019s role was to take care of the fugitives from forced labour units.
