In 1942 he joined the Zionist activities in whose framework he met his wife, Hedvig (Hedva) M\u00fcller. In October 1943 he was enlisted in a forced labor unit. In August 1944 Shmuel was wounded and hospitalized in P\u00e9cs. His wife, who visited him, brought him forged documents. After the Arrow Cross Party rose to power on 15.10.1944, Shmuel escaped, arrived in Budapest and joined the underground activities. His role was to take care of the cultural life in the bunkers that were set up by his movement. He was the editor of the movement\u2019s underground newspaper. His wife distributed the paper around the city. In December 1944 Shmuel was caught, taken to the prison on Margit Boulevard, interrogated and tortured.
