As soon as 1941, he helped refugees from German occupied areas arrive in Budapest. In 1943 he was enlisted in a forced labor unit and within that framework he took part in underground activities. With help from liaison people, members of the Zionist youth movements, he distributed forged documents to the people in the unit in order to help them escape. He deserted and joined a unit of partisans, named after the Hungarian poet \u201cS\u00e1ndor Pet\u00f8fi\u201d, which was set up after the failure of the Slovak uprising. Baruh received the \u201cUprising Decoration\u201d from the Slovak government.
