In 1943 he moved to Budapest and joined \u201cHehalutz Hatzair\u201d, the future \u201cDror Habonim\u201d. He learned knitting and earned a living from various jobs. In January-February 1944 Shmuel shared an apartment with his brother, Moshe, and Tzvi Prizant. Together they planned rescue and resistance operations. After the Germans invaded Hungary on 19.3.1944, Shmuel went underground with forged documents. In June he was enlisted in a forced labor unit and served in D\u00e9s. In August Shmuel and a group of comrades had the opportunity to escape and reach Budapest with forged documents brought to them by a member of the movement, P\u00e1l Ern\u00f8. However, the group decided not to run away because the Red Army was approaching and they hoped to be liberated. Shmuel was taken prisoner by Romanian soldiers, taken to Alba-Julia (Gyulafeh\u00e9rv\u00e1r) but liberated with his friends by the local Jews. He arrived in Italy, enlisted in the Palmah and did military training.<br \/>\nIn 1947 Shmuel made aliya and joined Kibbutz Givat Brenner.
