Iván studied at the Jewish high school in Budapest and, despite the “Numerus Clausus”, he completed his law and political science studies in the University of Budapest and got his diploma on 30.9.1944.
In 1944 he worked in the framework of the military committee of the Hungarian Communist Party: the László Sólyóm Group, György Pálffy, Lajos Fehér, the Maróti-Padányi Unit. Iván himself belonged to the auxiliary unit to the armed forces, Kiska-Kisegitő Karhatalom, with the rank of lieutenant. He was the liaison between the military committee and “Hashomer Hatzair” through David Gur. Kádár succeeded in housing the forgery workshop in the library building of the Student Union “Csaba”. After the liberation Iván was active in the Communist Party until, as a result of the Rajk trial, he was expelled from the Party. Later he was also fired from his job at the university.
After the turnabout in Hungary in 1989 and the first free elections, Iván was elected to the parliament on the Sz.D.Sz. (The party of the Free Democrats) list. In 1990 his reputation was cleared.
Iván wrote books about the theories of numbers. Until his death in 1995 he was the chairman of the “Association for the Culture of Hungarian Jews” (Magyar Zsidók Kulturális Egyesülete).
